First there was ExP & JND.

They were 18ish.

And spotty.

And they loved HipHop.

Aesop Rock's "Labour Days", Eminem's "Slim Shady LP", Fugees "The Score", Jehst "Return of the Drifter" - that kind of thing. Lyrical stuff; good stuff.

And they happened to bump into each other at a rather expensive monthly hiphop night at Revolution in Bradford called "Rockin;", set up by a number of people - briefly known as The Beatslaves. They didn't do too much here - it was more about the DJs, but there was a brief open mic thing each time and ExP tended to puke all over that. Not too brilliant - gotta start somewhere tho.

A little further down the line, Dr Crobe organised a monthly hiphop night for the masses along with a few of his bredrin. This was known as Breadbinz and happened in the Beehive. This was the shit. A nasty little cellar of a venue with a toilet to match was turned into one of the livliest spots of creativity in Yorkshire. Nuff weed got smoked, nuff freestyles were spat and acts like Broken English and Hoods Underground were often on the menu. It was from this monthly event that JND and ExP sharpened their open mic skills amongst piers such as Don't Talk to Strangers crew and Northern Property who went on to do their own ting. September 05 however, after being booted out by the Beehive (and Love Apple proved to be an unsuccessful venue) Breadbinz was pretty much knocked on the head.

All through this period of time, both emcees had been furiously writing solo material and collaborating with local and internet acts to help build their profile. By September 06 JND's Headphone Music was being handed round the underground and ExP's Bread In Bradford was being circulated as well. These songs were used, along with freestyles in a set that both emcees used at gigs together. While it went down relatively well, there was still something missing - if people hadn't heard the music, they had trouble associating themselves with two guys shouting into mics over a cd. Regardless of the hard work they did making it innovative (their rendition of Who's Rhyme is it Anyway was locally famed), something had to be done and then...

...then there was a gig for a mate's sister.

One of those important gigs, where you probably won't get paid owt - so you blag her brother to make you tshirts instead and you'll be playing at a conservative club in a village somewhere. Supporting a rock band maybe? Sounds great. So after Dead Rocker's Society did a pretty good job warming the crowd of friends and family up, JND and ExP stepped up to the mics.
But what's this!?
The Cd doesn't work?!?!?
Shiiit!
What do they do?
Quick as a flash, the rock band jumped up again and provided some inspired improvised backing. This worked. Even Granny was up having a dance. This was the key. Live music. Sweet.

So how the fuck are they gonna get a live band?

Jamie aka The Jesus God bless his cotton socks had some mates at Bradford Music College who were up for it, and thusly ExP and JND met;
Jay5ive, the self-taught jazz/rock/whatever genre drum demon who idolizes Elvin Jones and ?uestlove of the Roots
Egon, the funk/rock guitarist
Nick The Racist, who isn't really a racist, and plays bass like a massive black dude anyway. Despite being a massive white emo dude.
DJ Sixus, who played trumpet and did cuts on the wheels of steel. He later proved to be about as reliable as a papier-maché bandstand. Never Mind.

ExP was "friends" with a lass who's name probably shouldn't be mentioned for legal reasons and she jumped on board too.

And they all did a gig at Elbow Rooms, after two three hour practices together. It was beauty, terrible, but beauty. Again, gotta start somewhere.

Since then, Freyed Knot (or FK!) have gone from strength to strength, shedding the old singer, replacing the dj and guitarist with two guitarists and they now sit pretty with 8 members, one part timer and a student.

P, a guitarist/bassist from Africa stolen beautifully from Bradford funk legends Groovement who can't stop writing songs
Ben II, a guitarist/drummer/bassist LCOM student who is probably one of the most gifted musicians in Yorkshire
Harriette, a singer/guitarist from round the way who's done nuff solo work
Michael Bravo, a cut dj/bassist/guitarist/producer who heads up the record label Brutal Artistry and works with such artists as Spida Lee, Crobe, and even that ExP fella
